Mobile Operating Table: which Chassis is the Right one for My Application?

Looking for the optimal mobile operating table? Discover how BRUMABA is redefining efficiency in the operating room through customized chassis with our interview with Sebastian Brustmann. Learn how a mobile operating table can improve the surgical workflow and which chassis is best suited for your specialty.

An Interview with Sebastian Brustmann, Managing Director at BRUMABA.

Let’s start with the basic question: From your point of view, what are the main advantages of a mobile operating table compared to a non-mobile operating table, such as a dentist’s chair?

In modern medical facilities, such as in eye surgery, operations are often performed using the rotation principle with short operating times. With a mobile operating table, the next patient is already prepared on the mobile operating table so that things can start immediately. The simple handling of the table also makes it easier for patients to get on and off – and reduces the physical strain on staff. This saves time and stress, especially in high-frequency ORs where the rotation principle is used.

Depending on the size of the surgical field of the respective specialty, a mobile operating table also adapts to the workflow during the operation. The position of the table can be adjusted smoothly and without effort. The room layout adapts to any operating situation in no time at all. This is particularly pleasing for the left-handers among the surgeons. A mobile operating table can also be used in an interdisciplinary manner, e.g. used for cataract surgery and immediately afterwards converted for plastic reconstruction – all in different rooms.

The classic dentist’s chair, which is firmly anchored in the foundation of the floor, is more of an obstacle to the modern and productive workflow in the OR. To make it short: the mobile operating table makes operating rooms much more flexible and “actively works with”.

Interesting how much mobility affects various areas of patient care. What specific features do the mobile operating tables from BRUMABA offer that set them apart from other mobile operating tables?

Our tables are the result of close collaboration with medical professionals. Our goal is to develop mobile operating tables that provide both the workflow and the surgeon, the team, and the patient in the OR ergonomic optimal support.

For this reason, our tables are well thought out down to the last detail: No cable clutter and no tripping hazards thanks to powerful batteries that have a runtime of up to 2 weeks. An intelligent memory function that allows the surgeon to save and move to various predefined positions. Different chassis that are specially designed for use in different specialist areas designed. And a patented lift-brake system: With a simple mechanism, the table can be raised so that the castors float in the air and the table is positioned safely and stably in the room. The brake can be easily applied and released with the foot – and guarantees the same stability as with a fixed operating table. To give you a better illustration of all this, I have also recorded a short video for you.

Let’s go into detail: What are the differences between the different chassis that you offer? And how do medical professionals decide which chassis is best suited for their area?

The different chassis address the individual requirements of different surgical specialties. Our 2-Guide-Drive offers a compact design that is perfect for narrow spaces and smaller operating fields. Thanks to its 2 precise steering wheels, it is extremely maneuverable and offers maximum legroom at the same time – this is advantageous for procedures in oral and maxillofacial surgery, dental implantology, rhinoplasty or ENT surgery.

Our mobile operating tables with 4-Easy-Drive are equipped with 4 steering wheels that allow the OR team to rotate the table even in confined spaces. This is particularly useful for surgeons in ophthalmology / eye surgery or plastic surgery, as this chassis makes it easier to access all regions of the patient’s body. Surgeons in the field of dermatology or outpatient orthopedics also like to opt for the 4-Easy-Drive, as different permanently installed devices are used during the operation – the mobile operating table moves the patient to the corresponding position here without any effort. As a rule of thumb: If you want to be flexible in the OR, but do not travel too long distances with the mobile operating table, the 4-Easy-Drive is very well suited.

Our 5-Wheel-Drive finally offers even fifth support and steering wheel for better precision and stability. It is our “frequent driver model“: Ideal for long distances within the clinic and for specialist areas in which a frequent change of location of the table is required. The additional wheel ensures that the table does not drift sideways during travel and can be positioned precisely in the desired position. The 5th wheel also enables the mobile operating table to be rotated without a turning circle. Here we are thinking primarily of eye surgery, in which surgeons work according to the rotation principle, and of orthopedics, where fast and safe movements of the table and, if necessary, smooth driving and maneuvering over long distances are crucial.

I have recorded a short explanatory video on this topic for those who are interested: Here I show you the differences between the 3 chassis of our mobile operating tables, and for which applications they are particularly well suited. Just take a look.
